Will Families Return To Theaters This Weekend?

This weekend will reveal whether families are mostly all-movied-out for the summer. Add to last week's Turbo from Dreamworks Animation and Fox and Universal's Despicable Me 2, which is going into its fifth weekend, Sony's Smurfs 2, which is opening today (Wednesday). Tracking reports indicate that it will earn around $35 million, about the same as the original did two years ago. But if those reports are wrong -- and last week's predictions for Turbo were well off the mark -- it could have devastating consequences for the powers-that-be at Sony, who have presided over two box-office disasters this summer, After Earth and White House Down. At this point, Sony execs are acknowledging that the Smurfs movie will likely not turn into a big hit domestically but that, like its predecessor, it should perform strongly overseas.
