Willem Dafoe - Willem Dafoe: Spider-Man reboot is 'cynical'

Willem Dafoe has branded 'The Amazing Spider-Man' ''cynical''.

The actor played Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, in Sony's original 'Spider-Man' trilogy directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, and while he hasn't seen the 2012 reboot with Andrew Garfield in the lead role, he believes it's far too similar to the earlier franchise.

He told Total Film: ''I saw a trailer for the first 'Spider-Man' reboot and I thought, 'This is crazy! It's not shot for shot, but it's the same story.' I thought, 'This is sort of a cynical approach to making money!'''

The veteran star feels the new franchise is fuelled by box office returns, whereas the original 2002 'Spider-Man' was ''pure'' in its intentions.

He explained: ''I like 'Spider-Man', the first one that I was involved in, because although you can argue all sorts of things, from my perspective it was very pure. It really was. The way Sam Raimi approached it, it was pure in its intentions and I think he captured, particularly, Tobey at that particular moment. This real, genuine innocence; it wasn't indicated,''

Dafoe's comments echo similar sentiments shared by his former on-screen son James Franco, who played Harry Osborn in the Raimi trilogy.

The actor said he didn't ''feel distress'' over the remake but questioned why it was made so soon after 2007's 'Spider-Man 3', feeling producers were motivated by money.
