Mystery still surrounds the apparent link between the music producer Swizz Beatz and the FBI shutdown of the alleged file-sharing website Megaupload. Swizz Beatz, whose real name is Kasseem Dean and is the husband of Alicia Keys had his named listed as CEO of the site before it was taken down.
Although he was not one of the seven people arrested in connection to the site, there is further evidence to suggest that he is in some way linked to Megaupload. He appears in a promotional video for the site and talks as though he has close links with the Megaupload organisation. Other stars in the video include Kanye West and Mary J Blige. They all talk about the site in a favourable manner but Swizz Beatz is the only one that talks about the site as though he is in some way involved. To add further confusion to the situation, though, Swizz Beatz's former distribution label, Universal, have been engaged in a legal battle with the file transfer site.
According to the Wall Street journal's 'Speakeasy' blog, an indictment released on Thursday (January 19, 2012) identified the site's owners (including somebody by the name of Kim Dotcom) but Swizz was not one of them. Currently, the producer's agents and label contacts are remaining tight-lipped about the possible connection between Swizz Beatz and Megaupload and the Wall Street journalist was passed from agent, to label, to movie production company, without a firm or definitive answer being provided.
