Foo Fighters rocker Dave Grohl wanted to re-record the group's debut album to mark its 20th anniversary until his bandmate Taylor Hawkins convinced him it was the "worst idea" he had ever had.

Grohl recorded the self-titled album in 1994 as a solo project following Kurt Cobain's death and the end of Nirvana, but by the time of its release in 1995 he used a band name to 'hide' his involvement.

He later put together a group of musicians and the Foo Fighters were born, and now Grohl is dreaming of potential projects to celebrate the band's 20th anniversary, but drummer Hawkins nixed the rocker's favourite idea.

Grohl tells NME magazine, "At one point I thought, 'You know what would be really funny? To re-record the first Foo Fighters record as the band we are now' - 'cos the first record isn't the Foo Fighters, it's just me. So what if, for the 20th anniversary, we went in and re-recorded the first record - same songs, same arrangements, in sequence - but as the Foo Fighters 2014? Taylor was like, 'Are you out of your f**king mind?! That's the worst idea ever! People would f**king hate it!' And (guitarist) Pat (Smear) said, 'That's exactly why we should do it!'"

Grohl has also ruled out marking the anniversary by playing the debut album in full live, adding, "I think that's a s**ty idea! I don't get why people do that. We've already written that one off."
