The 2013 box office pulled almost even with 2012's as the weekend saw a 12-percent boost in ticket sales over a year ago, when The Dark Knight Rises held on to first place in its third week with $35.7 million. This week's leader, Universal's 2 Guns, collected only $27.1 million in its opening weekend, but a solid slate of holdovers helped bring the year's grand total to $6,821,165,799 -- down just a tenth of one percent from last year's $6,827,816,594. That near-parity was achieved as a result of higher ticket prices, however, as attendance remains down -- 3.4 percent as of last weekend -- versus last year. It continued to be a very good year for Universal at the box office, with 2 Guns and Despicable Me 2 landing in the top five. In fact, Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian observed that the first-place debut of 2 Guns marks the seventh time Universal has claimed the No. 1 spot at the North American box office in 2013. In limited release, Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine expanded to fifty theaters (from six a week ago) and earned $2.85 million, for an average of $37,174 per theater. (By contrast, 2 Guns averaged $8,945 per theater.) The figure beat the second week of Allen's Midnight in Paris, his most successful movie to date, Dergarabedian observed.
