The second installment in The Hobbit franchise has desolated the competition at the U.K. box office after pulling in $13.9 million (£9.3 million) in its opening week.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug now tops both the British and American box office charts following its release on 13 December (13).

The movie, starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, knocked Disney animated hit Frozen from the number one spot, making double its $6.3 million (£4.2 million).

Another sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, claimed number three with takings of $2.1 million (£1.4 million), while Sandra Bullock's space thriller Gravity and Saving Mr. Banks rounded out the top five with $888,000 (£592,321) and $538,500 (£359,134) respectively.
