Muse and Lily Allen lead nominees list
A grand total of 14 artists have achieved nominations for the 2007 BRIT Awards with MasterCard. They were chosen by The BRIT Awards Voting Academy, comprised of 1,000 representatives from all areas of the music industry - including press and media.
Leading the pack are the grand-scale rock of Muse and the distinctive songcraft of Lily Allen with three nominations apiece, Three of the best singer-songwriters discovered and developed in the UK - Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae and James Morrison - each secure two nominations, as do indie champions the Arctic Monkeys.
BPI Chairman Peter Jamieson said, "The strength of UK talent right now is highlighted by the number of debut albums represented in the nominations. Something very powerful and very exciting is happening right now in British music."
The MasterCard British Album award is as prestigious a prize as ever and will be keenly contested by a quintet of superb albums released during 2006. Winehouse's sophisticated second set 'Back To Black' and Allen's distinctive, original debut 'Alright, Still' go up against Muse's chart-topping 'Black Holes & Revelations', Snow Patrol's quintuple-platinum 'Eyes Open' and the Arctic Monkeys' landmark first album 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.'
A host of other UK acts, who made their big breakthrough during 2006, are also rewarded with nominations, including Paolo Nutini, Nerina Pallot, The Fratellis and The Kooks. They're joined by such established British acts as Razorlight, Snow Patrol, Kasabian and Lemar, as well as two frontmen of long-admired groups winning their first BRITs recognition for solo work, Jarvis Cocker and Thom Yorke.
Lily Allen, Corrine Bailey Rae and James Morrison are all up for British Breakthrough Act, the category that, more than any other, always reflects the achievements of emerging UK talent. They're pitted against two of Britain's hottest rock acts, The Kooks and The Fratellis.
Rarely has there been a more powerful nominations list for the coveted British Group honour in the 30-year history of the BRIT Awards. Muse, who recently underlined their credentials by announcing two dates at the new Wembley Stadium this summer, will contest the prestigious title at The BRITs with the Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Razorlight and Snow Patrol.
Another of the class of 2006, Guillemots, win a nomination in the British Live Act category, alongside Muse, Kasabian and two giants of BRIT Awards history, multiple winners Robbie Williams and George Michael.
The International Award categories are also plentifully stocked with exciting talent spanning an extremely broad musical vista. Gnarls Barkley, fresh from having their anthemic, history-making 'Crazy' named as the UK's biggest-selling single of 2006, join Muse and Lily Allen with three nods. Song writing legend Bob Dylan marks another momentous year in his unrivalled history with two new nominations. Three more massive names on the international stage, The Killers, the Scissor Sisters and Justin Timberlake, receive two nods each. The international solo categories also feature huge names from Beyoncé to Beck.
