Hotly-anticipated movie The Lord Of The Rings: THE RETURN OF THE KING has made the AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE's (AFI) best films of the year list - even though it hasn't been released yet.

The annual list, which is chosen by a selected 13-person committee, features a non-ranked compilation of the year's favourite film offerings, and this year (03) includes Finding Nemo, In America and Lost In Translation.

JEAN PICKER FIRSTENBERG, AFI director and chief executive officer, says, "I think what AFI is trying to create is an almanac for the 21st century so we can look back and see what we consider excellence in narrative storytelling in 2003."

Many of the films noted - which also include The Human Stain and THE LAST SAMURAI - have already been tipped for OSCAR success by industry experts.
