The Maccabeats, a newly formed singing group from Yeshiva University, have become internet sensations after their video for Hanukkah song 'Candlelight' received well over 2 million hits in its first ten days on YouTube, reports Cbs News. The track is sung to the melody of the song 'Dynamite' by Taio Cruz, and features a retelling of the Hanukkah story.
Speaking about becoming over-night musical sensations, MACCABEATS member JULIAN HOROWITZ said, "We really didn't expect what happened. We're still just recovering from the shell shock". The band, which is made up of 14 current and former students of the school, say they want to keep making music, adding, "We definitely want to make sure we continue to have fun and we continue to inspire others". Horowitz also explained that the song and video were initially created as a promotional way to showcase their abilities, and its popularity has led to a number of live television appearances and news articles.
The track includes lyrics such as "I flip my latkes in the air sometimes," and the video sees the band re-enact the battle between the Greeks and the MACcabees.
