Al Jazeera has scrapped plans to fill 40 percent of the content for its new American news channel with programming from Qatar-based Al Jazeera English and will instead originate virtually of its programming from the U.S., according to The New York Times, which cited staff members and others associated with the channel. The channel also intends to focus on the U.S. in an apparent effort to distinguish itself from the original Arab-language news channel that once took much heat from conservative politicians in the U.S. who accused it of being a soap box for terrorists. The change in focus, the Times suggested, may explain why Al Jazeera America's start date was delayed to August from July and why it may be delayed yet again.
