Rock newcomers The Orwells have shrugged off the controversy surrounding disparaging comments they made about former tourmates the Arctic Monkeys.

The Orwells served as the support act for the Brainstorm hitmakers on their U.S. tour earlier this year (14), but they recently made it clear they weren't too impressed with frontman Alex Turner's allegedly scripted comments to the crowds at concerts, and did not think much of the British group performing the same routine night after night.

Guitarist Matt O'Keefe told Gigwise.com, "When you're playing arenas and everything, it's a huge production then the show has to become synchronised to work... So every night no matter how he (Turner) was feeling he'd go into that opening riff. It was the exact same ad-libs he was putting between the songs. So we were with them for about 50 dates, you saw them once and you'd pretty much seen every date that they'd played."

The remarks caused a stir online, but The Orwells simply brushed off the criticism by making light of the whole situation at a gig in London on Wednesday night (16Apr14).

During the intimate show, frontman Mario Cuomo laughed off the furore by joking that the comments were "from our new album, Am" - the name of the Arctic Monkeys' latest release.

However, he stopped short of issuing an apology and simply claimed, "We would never slag off (slam) the biggest band in England right now."
