The Producers has been nominated for a major British theatre award, despite only opening in London's West End last week (ends12NOV04).

The Broadway, New York, musical - starring Nathan Lane and LEE EVANS - was thrown into crisis when original cast member Richard Dreyfuss was sacked from the production after failing to master the complex dance moves.

But Producers veteran Lane stepped in to save the show, which has scored rave reviews since launching in the British capital - and now it's been shortlisted in the EVENING STANDARD THEATRE AWARDS.

The Producers will compete against SWEENEY TODD and A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM for the Best Musical prize.

Awards will be handed out at a ceremony on 13 December (04) at London's National Theatre.
