The pop icon split from the Snatch moviemaker in 2008 after a seven-year union, and Madonna admits they regularly clashed over her music.

She tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "I think when you get married you have to be willing to make compromise and that's fair enough. However, I did find myself in a state of conflict... There were many times when I wanted to express myself as an artist in ways that I don't think my ex-husband felt comfortable with. There were times when I felt incarcerated. I wasn't really allowed to be myself.

"It doesn't mean that marriage is a bad thing. But if you're an artist, you've got to find someone who accepts who you are and is comfortable with that."

Madonna insists she is not ruling out remarrying in the future, and admits she would like to have a new romance, adding, "I'm single. But I'd like to have a man around the house - that would be nice."

Ritchie was Madonna's second husband after a previous marriage to Sean Penn in the 1980s. The director is now engaged to model Jacqui Ainsley and they have three children together. He shares 14-year-old Rocco and adopted nine-year-old son David with Madonna.
