The Who drummer Keith Moon offered to join rival band THE BEATLES - but was rebuffed by their own percussionist Ringo Starr.

The PICTURES OF LILY star - who died in 1978 - chanced upon the LET IT BE group in a club during their 1960s heyday and requested a place in their infamous line-up.

According to author BILL HARRY - who recently published the RINGO STARR ENCYCLOPEDIA - Moon asked bandmates John Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney, GEORGE HARRISON and Starr, "Do you mind if I join you?"

Thinking he meant he could join their party that night, the Beatles told Moon to pull up a chair. Moon reiterated, "No, I mean do you mind if I join you."

Ringo shot back, "We've already got a drummer thanks."

Happily, Starr and Moon forged a strong bond following the incident and remained close until the tragic star's death.

Ironically, Starr's son Zak Starkey is now the drummer for The Who.
