A former contestant on Australia's The X Factor has been hospitalised following a knife attack during a nightclub fight.

Sydney-based rapper Jelal Edmonds was attempting to break up a brawl at the launch party for his new single at the city's Club Eleven when the incident happened on Saturday night (13Oct12).

The 19 year old, aka Lazy J, was taken to St Vincent's Hospital, where he is in a serious but stable condition after emergency surgery.

His sidekick Panapa Iafeta reveals the fracas happened outside the club and involved a man who had been ejected from the party.

He says, "We were at Club Eleven and so happy about the single and had just got out in the street when it all happened. There was yelling and screaming and punches being thrown. Jelal came over to help and then there were people getting hysterical and before I knew it the police arrived.

"I looked over and Jelal was standing near a pedestrian crossing. He just sank down like he was in a slow motion movie. Then he lay on his back. When I got to him his eyes just kind of closed... That's when I saw he had this stab wound right near his heart."

A spokesman for St Vincent's Hospital tells the Sydney Daily Telegraph, "He (Edmonds) was in a critical condition when he was brought in. It was touch and go. Now it's looking a lot better and he is in a serious but stable condition."

Two men were arrested at the scene of the incident and both have been charged with affray.
