British rockers The XX have scrapped the remaining dates on their current U.S. tour due to the impending threat of Hurricane Sandy hitting America's East Coast.

The trio, which won the U.K.'s prestigious Mercury Music Prize for its debut album xx in 2010, was due to perform in the Bronx, New York on Sunday (28Oct12), but the band axed the show after Big Apple officials announced the city's entire transit system would be shut down from 7pm Est that night and advised residents to evacuate certain areas of the state for safety.

Making the announcement on Facebook.com, The xx wrote, "Due to safety concerns related to Hurricane Sandy and the Mta (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) shutdown in New York, we have been forced to postpone our remaining shows in New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore, including tonight's show at the Paradise in the Bronx.

"We are working with the promoters to reschedule as soon as possible, so please hang on to your tickets... In the meantime, please be safe. We'll be back to see you all soon."

The xx tour isn't the only event to be cancelled due to weather and safety fears - singer Brandi Carlile has pulled the plug on her Sunday and Monday (29Oct12) gigs in the Big Apple, while all Broadway shows have been suspended for the same two days.

Production on Colin Farrell's new movie Winter's Tale in New York has also been postponed as a result of Hurricane Sandy, which was briefly downgraded to a tropical storm on Saturday (27Oct12) but was soon re-labelled a hurricane.

The massive storm is expected to batter the East Coast on Monday after high winds and rain killed more than 40 people when it swept through the Caribbean earlier this week (ends28Oct12).
