Actor Tom Hanks is "healthier than ever" after turning his lifestyle around following his diabetes diagnosis last year (13), according to his wife Rita Wilson.

The Captain Phillips star revealed in October (13) that he suffers from Type 2 diabetes, a lifelong condition in which the body fails to produce enough insulin.

He admitted doctors had advised him to slim down to help control the symptoms, but voiced fears he would struggle to lose weight at the age of 57.

Hanks quipped, "My doctor said, 'If you can weigh what you weighed in high school, you'll essentially be completely healthy and not have Type 2 diabetes.' And I said, 'Well, I'm going to have Type 2 diabetes then.'"

However, Wilson claims the health news served as a wake-up call to the Hollywood legend and he is now feeling in tip-top shape.

The Jingle All the Way actress explains, "He's healthier than ever because when you get a diagnosis like that you can't mess around so he's probably healthier than he's ever been now.

"He's dropped weight, he exercises every day, and he's eating properly and... thank God, doing really well."
