Tom Hanks has become the latest star to help Los Angeles police spread the word about this weekend's (16-17Jul11) traffic chaos, urging fans to "eat and shop locally" and avoid the 405 freeway.
The actor joined the likes of Ashton Kutcher and William Shatner when he took to Twitter.com on Wednesday (13Jul11) and told his followers not to risk getting caught up in what is being dubbed Carmageddon.
Police reached out to celebrities with 500,000 Twitter followers or more to help them make sure drivers were aware of the closure of the 405 freeway via the social networking site.
And Hanks, who has become a scooter devotee after taking home the two-wheeler his character drives in new film Larry Crowne, wants his fans to steer well clear of the freeways this Saturday and Sunday.
He writes, "This weekend, LA! Avoid Carmageddon, Gas-zilla, 405-enstein, Grid-lock-apalooza! Stay Home. Eat & shop local."
