Tom Jones wowed with a surprise performance on the 'American Idol' finale last night (25.05.11).

The 70-year-old Welsh singer performed his hit song 'It's Not Unusual' after the top 13 male contestants sang a medley of his hits while Beyonce performed with the girls.

They were just two of the star performers who included Marc Anthony, Tim Mcgraw and Tony Bennett, before 17-year-old country crooner Scotty McCreery was crowned 'American Idol' champion for 2011.

The clearly shocked contestant received more votes from the public than his fellow finalist Lauren Alaina to become the fourth male contestant in a row to win the FOX talent contest last night (25.05.11).

After his name was called out he said: "Never in my wildest dreams. I've got to thank the Lord first, though. He got me here."

Over 122 million people voted in the tenth season finale, favouring the baby-faced teen from North Carolina and his distinctly deep vocal style.

Scotty later said he was overjoyed to win the competition and praised the show's judges for being so down-to-earth.
