Last night's Tony Awards saw South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone win nine honours for their satirical musical 'The Book of Mormon'. The critically acclaimed and often controversial production dominated the Tony Awards, despite stiff competition from the likes of War Horse and The Normal Heart, reports Bbc News.
Parker and Stone scooped the evening's top awards for their musical, which follows the adventures of two Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda. The comedy duo credited South Park fans for their success, saying they "wouldn't be here" without them. Parker jokingly thanked the pair's "co-writer" Joseph Smith - the man of who founded the Mormon religion, adding, "You did it Joseph, you got the Tony". Elsewhere on the star-studded evening in New York City, Oscar-winner Frances McDormand scooped 'Best Actress' for her role as the single mother in 'Good People', and Larry Kramer's 'Normal Heart' won 'Best Revival of a Play'. British actor Mark Rylance, lauded for his role as 'Rooster Byron' in 'Jerusalem', walked away with the gong for 'Best Actor'.
This year's Tony Awards, hosted by the actor Neil Patrick Harris, was held at the Beacon Theatre. Its usual home at the Radio City Music Hall is currently home to a residency by arts collective Cirque du Soleil. Presenters on the night included Harry Potter star DANIEL RADCLIFFE.
