Soccer star-turned-actor Vinnie Jones is calling on officials to impose tougher prison sentences on hooligans who cause trouble at matches.

The X-Men: The Last Stand star played for a number of high-profile British teams before launching his Hollywood career, and now he is campaigning for an end to soccer violence.

Jones is convinced hooliganism needs to be "stamped out" to make the sport more family-friendly, and he wants offenders to be given longer prison sentences.

He tells Australia's Herald Sun, "It's got to be stamped out before it starts. You're going to get a minority in whatever you do that are going to try to upset the apple cart and have their moment of fame. That's got to be stopped before it even raises its ugly head.

"It's no good saying we will give you a week in prison; at some stage they are going to have to give these boys a year or five years in prison. Why not start at that and say, 'We want this friendly environment for people to take their kids and be grown up with the sport, not terrified to go to games'."
