Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh passed away in Chicago on Sunday (9th October 2011), just days after predicting his own death on Twitter. The musician, who played with the rock band from 1998 to 2001, died of a suspected drug overdose at the age of 40, reports the Associated Press.
Welsh had travelled to Chicago for the city's RiotFest - he was planning to watch his former band perform on Sunday. The bassist had played on Weezer's well received 'Green Album', but left the band after suffering a nervous breakdown. Following confirmation of his death, fans had pointed toward a tweet left by the musician on Monday (26th September 2011), which read, "dreamt i died in chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep). need to write my will today". In a statement on their website, the band paid tribute to their friend, saying, "Mikey was never one to shy away from the absurd, dangerous or strange, and he did so with a gusto few others had. No one had quite the stage presence of Mikey." Singer Rivers Cuomo took to his Twitter page to pay personal tribute to Welsh, telling followers, "Mikey, thank you for being there when times were tough. Thank you for making me laugh. Thank you for your honesty. And thank you for the sick bass playing. We're all gonna miss you".
The group had kept in close contact with Welsh following his recovery from the breakdown. In their statement, they recalled meeting the bassist at their recent show with The Flaming Lips at Jones Beach in New York.
