Britons believe Will Smith would be the perfect choice to play US presidential hopeful Barack Obama in a film of his life, a new poll has revealed.

The Democratic senator is currently leading Republican nominee John McCain in public polls ahead of November 4th's election, provoking the new survey from Virgin Media.

And with almost a third of the vote, Fresh Prince star Smith has been voted the ideal choice to play Senator Obama should a biopic be filmed.

The actor and rapper, a staunch Democrat and Obama supporter, declared earlier this year that he and the senator have the same ears.

Some 32 per cent of poll respondents agreed with Smith about his resemblance to the politician and said the Men in Black star should play Mr Obama in a movie of his life story.

Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington finished in second place while diminutive Different Strokes actor Gary Coleman was a surprise joint third with Jamie Foxx.

The top five favourites to play Barack Obama are:

1 Will Smith - 32 per cent
2 Denzel Washington - 23 per cent
3 Gary Coleman - 16 per cent
4 Jamie Foxx - 16 per cent
5 Eddie Murphy - 16 per cent
