Veteran film-maker Woody Allen believes he's achieved phenomenal success by targetting people who want to escape the harsh realities of modern life.
The MANHATTAN star, who has also made a number of serious dramas including INTERIORS, claims people seek sanctuary in comedies to numb themselves from their anxieties.
Well-known pessimist Allen tells British magazine Empire, "You can see things from two different perspectives all the time. Most people tend to characterise life comically because they don't want to face up to how terrible it really is.
"You can brood, get depressed or kill yourself. There is another alternative, but most people are more comfortable with taking the comic angle.
"That's why in the movies or the theatre, 98 per cent of the time, sad things rarely happen the way they happen in life, to real people."17/03/2005 17:26
