The Yeah Yeah Yeahs escaped from their personal problems by only recording "uplifting and cheerful" music, according to frontwoman Karen O.

The singer admits she was going through an "identity crisis" when the time came to record new album Mosquito, while guitarist Nick Zinner had endured a bad break-up - so they used their studio sessions to help the healing process.

She tells Pitchfork.com, "Emotionally, it's been a rollercoaster... I've gone through an identity crisis. It's been very emotionally intense for Nick (Zinner, guitarist), too. He was going through a break-up while we were making the album. It was just all kind of down...

"It was tough. There were dark times. So whenever we'd go into our studio space, we would just try and play music that was uplifting and cheerful. The music is more of a prescription for what we were feeling. It was like a pep talk."
