Disney's huge grossing superhero movie 'The Avengers' will continue its supremacy at the box-office this weekend, and could record the first $100 million second-week gross in cinema history. 3-D epic 'Avatar' and 'The Dark Knight' both achieved mid $70 million during their second outing, but interest in Joss Whedon's Marvel movie is still huge.
On average, the movie has taken $15 million per day mid-week in North America and close to $30 million internationally. Reports suggest it could have grossed $400 domestically and $1 billion worldwide by Sunday evening (May 13, 2012). It's only competition this weekend comes in the form of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton's latest collaborative movie 'Dark Shadows', based on the cult television soap opera of the 1960s and 1970s. It's drawn a mediocre response from critics and despite an all-star cast featuring Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz and of course Mr Depp, it's unlikely to get anywhere near The Avengers second week gross. Elsewhere, Sony's adaptation of Steve Harvey's dating book 'Think Like a Man' is expected to take around $5 million, taking its total to around $80 million overall. Lionsgate blockbuster 'The Hunger Games' and the Zac Efron starring romance 'The Lucky One', should earn around $3 million each.
Following the huge success of 'The Avengers', Disney have already confirmed that a sequel is on the way, however, the likes of Iron Man 3, Captain America 2 and Thor 2 are likely to hit cinemas first.
