Gal Gadot has been cast as Wonder Woman in the 'Man of Steel' sequel.

The Israeli-born actress - best known for her role as Gisele in the 'Fast & Furious' franchise - has won the coveted superheroine role in Warner Bros.' upcoming Superman film, joining Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, who will play caped crusader Batman.

Director Zack Snyder said in a statement: ''Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favourite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.''

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gadot beat competition from Olga Kurylenko and 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' actress Elodie Yung to win the role.

The 28-year-old beauty previously had a supporting role in the last three 'Fast & Furious' films, including the smash hit sixth film which was released this past summer.

Wonder Woman was most famously played by Lynda Carter in a 1970s TV series but has never been portrayed in a live-action film, despite numerous attempts to bring the lasso-wielding heroine to life on the big screen.

The as-yet-untitled 'Man of Steel' sequel - which is rumoured to be called 'Batman vs Superman' - is set for release in July 2015.
